A group of Tampa marketers just launched MindState — a functional sparkling water pitched as an alcohol alternative — and kicked it off with an in-store tasting at HerbanFlow in St. Pete on June 6. The whole lineup is built around what people actually drink for.
That last line is easy to skim past. Don't. It's the entire bet, and it's a sharper one than most of the aisle it's walking into.
"Non-Alcoholic" Is a Terrible Thing to Sell
Walk the alcohol-alternative shelf and most of it is selling an absence. Non-alcoholic. Zero-proof. Without. The pitch is defined by what's missing.
The problem is nobody actually craves the absence. No one has ever wanted "not a beer." What they wanted was the thing the beer was standing in for — to take the edge off, to feel social, to mark the end of the day, to feel a little different than they did an hour ago. Sell people the hole where their drink used to be and you've given them a reason to feel deprived. That's a hard product to love.
Selling the Reason, Not the Removal
MindState's framing — built around what people drink for — flips that. Functional sparkling water that targets the actual job: lift me up, calm me down, give me the ritual without the hangover.
That's the right fight to pick. And it's telling that marketers built this. People whose entire job is positioning looked at a crowded category, saw everyone selling the same negative, and chose to sell the motive instead. Whether the liquid delivers is a separate question — but the strategy is correct before a single can is opened.
The Tasting Is the Tell
Here's the other thing I'd point at: they didn't launch with a billboard. They launched with a tasting, in a local shop, one sip at a time.
For any drink promising a feeling instead of an alcohol content, taste is the entire product — get it wrong and the function never matters, because nobody takes a second sip. Starting at HerbanFlow in St. Pete, in front of real mouths, is the grassroots, unglamorous way to build a beverage: earn the room before you buy the reach. It's slower. It's also how the brands that last tend to start.
The Reframe
The alcohol-alternative category won't be won by whoever removes the alcohol best. Everyone can remove alcohol.
It'll be won by whoever replaces the reason — the lift, the wind-down, the ritual people were really after. MindState is betting on the motive instead of the absence, and proving it one tasting at a time. That's the version of this category worth watching.
